The Tonale small crossover SUV is the best-selling Alfa Romeo offered in the U.S. market, topping that of the Stelvio mid-size SUV and Giulia sedan. Aside from its exterior details, most of the Tonale’s content is shared with the now-discontinued Dodge Hornet. Introduced in 2024, the Tonale gets a mildly refreshed front-end appearance for 2026 with a new fascia and concave scudetto grille inspired by the exotic Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale. The lower front fascia now features larger tri-lobe lower intakes inspired by the Giulia GTA, and a shorter front overhang and wider front and rear tracks give the 2026 Tonale a more planted-looking road stance.

Alfa Romeo has rejiggered the Tonale model selection in the U.S. for 2026. Including the rather hefty $3,250 destination charge this year (likely a result of tariffs levied due to the Tonale’s Pomigliano, Italy-sourced final-assembly location), pricing is as follows: Tonale Sprint ($40,745), Tonale Veloce ($45,245), and Tonale Sport Speciale (also $45,245). All versions are well-equipped with standard all-wheel drive.

Competition in the premium-brand small crossover SUV market includes the Audi Q3, BMW X1 and X2, Lexus UX, Mercedes-Benz GLA, Mini Countryman, and the Volvo XC40.

Sizing Up the Tonale

As sensational as the Tonale’s front styling is, the smallest Alfa Romeo’s side view is probably its worst. With a wheelbase about as long as the Volkswagen GTI’s but nearly a foot more length front to rear and plenty of air between the top of the tires and the wheel openings, the Tonale has a car-on-stilts look. Alfa Romeo would like you to see echoes of the 1960s Giulia GT coupe in the Tonale’s beltline, but it’s doubtful buyers of the youthful small crossover that the 115-year-old company is courting will care much about its design history. In profile, the Tonale seems rather tall and stands nearly a half-foot higher, road-to-roof, than the Volkswagen GTI. Of course, if you want a low-slung Alfa Romeo, the brand still offers the Giulia sedan. At least, the Tonale’s taller stance offers the driver and interior occupants a better view of the road ahead.

Differentiating the three Tonale trims, the Sprint rolls on 18-inch five-hole “telephone dial” alloys, the Veloce sports 19-inch five-holers, and the Sport Speciale gets lightweighted 20-inch three-hole alloy wheels.

Under the Hood

For the 2026 model year, Alfa Romeo ditched the slow-selling plug-in hybrid version of the Tonale, focusing instead on the peppy, turbocharged 2.0-liter gas engine that in hindsight seems more aligned with the brand’s performance reputation. Rated at a healthy 268 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 295 pound-feet of torque at 3,000 rpm, the turbo 2.0-liter inline-four engine is among the most powerful powerplants in the small crossover SUV segment, topping that of the Audi Q3 S Line Quattro, BMW X1 and X2 xDrive 28i, Lexus UX 300h, Mercedes-Benz GLA 250, Mini Countryman, and Volvo XC40 B5. The Tonale is capable of delivering 0-60 mph sprints in the high 5- to low 6-second range. However, peak torque is developed at a fairly lofty 3,000 rpm so the engine has to work a bit harder for brisk acceleration in the everyday commute. This affects fuel efficiency and in fact the Tonale’s 24 mpg EPA estimated combined city/highway fuel economy is at the low end compared to other premium small crossovers. I saw an average 23.1 mpg over 165 miles during a week of mixed city and highway driving. The Tonale’s turbo four is teamed with a nine-speed automatic transmission, offering a generous selection of gear ratios to help keep the somewhat peaky engine in the fat part of the power curve. Available steering column-mounted aluminum shift paddles facilitate on-demand manual gear shifting.

Command and Control

The Tonale is a driver’s vehicle, configured with a likeable blend of physical and screen-based electronic controls, the latter mostly for infotainment functions in the 10.25-inch center display. In front of the driver is a customizable 12.3-inch TFT digital gauge cluster housed under a twin-hood binnacle cover that recalls Alfa Romeo coupes and roadsters from the 1960s and early 1970s. Among the driver-selectable configurations are a classic simulated side-by-side speedometer and tachometer, a modern one with digital readouts, and another that imports a navigation map and turn-by-turn directions.

The standard dual-zone automatic climate control utilizes a row of easy-to-operate hard buttons above the center console. Other hard buttons for various functions live on the spokes of the standard, heated, leather-wrapped steering wheel. One unusual one is the quarter-size Formula One inspired engine start pushbutton under the left spoke, which can sometimes take a moment or two to find if the steering wheel isn’t pointed straight ahead. On the other hand, large aluminum shift paddles on the steering column of Veloce and Sport Speciale models make it easy to manually change gear ratios of the nine-speed automatic transmission for drivers so inclined. Also, for drivers wanting to customize their driving experience is a DNA drive mode selector dial on the center console: more on that later.

Inside, the Tonale offers a pleasing mix of soft-touch and padded surfaces on the door uppers and dash with contrasting-color double stitching on the lower dash, door armrests and center armrest. Multi-color selectable ambient lighting accents the dash in Veloce and Sport Speciale models and adds a dramatic element when driving at night. A power-operated tilt/slide sunroof with a separate power-operated sunshade is optional.

The tidy, driver-centric center console houses a stubby short-throw transmission gear selector, a standard wireless cellphone charger, dual cup holders, and a covered storage cubby under the padded center armrest. The glovebox is generously sized and additional storage for trip detritus and beverages is provided in the door pockets. One each USB-A and USB-C charge ports below the climate control buttons add connectivity for streaming and power for charging additional personal devices.

Tonale Connectivity

At 10.25 inches, the Tonale’s Uconnect 5 multimedia system doesn’t have the largest infotainment screen in the small crossover SUV segment, especially when compared to the Audi Q3, BMW X1 and X2, and the optional display in the Lexus UX. But the Alfa’s resolution is sharp, and the presentation is colorful and well organized. Although it lacks rotary knobs for adjusting volume and tuning adjacent to the screen, there are push buttons for those functions on the steering wheel, arrows for tuning audio sources onscreen, and a handy roller wheel for volume control accessible by both driver and front passenger on the center console. The screen is easy to use and features favorite presets along the bottom of the screen and a handy home icon in the upper left-hand corner to get you back to square one after diving through screen sub-menus. The layout is customizable.

The Tonale comes standard with a three-year trial of Alfa Connect, which includes embedded Tom Tom navigation with traffic information, as well as remote vehicle functions and Alexa built-in. The system also features standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto cellphone mirroring capability. While good at finding and navigating to most points of interest using voice activation, I found the Google search in Android Auto to be more up to date than the native Alfa Connect system.

A six-speaker AM/FM stereo with HD Radio and a three-month trial of SiriusXM is standard. The test vehicle was equipped with a 12-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system which delivered an immersive, full-spectrum sound experience.

Take Your Seat

All Tonale models provide standard eight-way power adjustability and four-way lumbar adjustment for the front bucket seats. The seats are heated and offer body-hugging support for the lower torso and thighs and good comfort for drives whether it’s the daily commute, long freeway slogs, or the occasional saunter down a twisty back road. There are no hard or intrusive lateral bolsters to slide one’s posterior over entering or exiting the vehicle. As with other crossover SUVs, the driving position is slightly elevated compared to that of a sedan.

The Tonale Veloce shown here looks stunning with its red leather seats (also available in black). The base Tonale Sprint features seats covered in black sport cloth, while the Sport Speciale version gets grippy black and white Alcantara seat coverings.

Rear Seating

The Tonale’s bench back seat can accommodate three adults, two comfortably in the nicely contoured outboard positions with extended thigh support cushions. Inches count and Tonale has more of them in key areas, offering more rear seat headroom than the Audi Q3, Mini Countryman, and Lexus UX 300h and more rear seat legroom than the Audi Q3, BMW X1, Lexus UX 300h, Mini Countryman, and Volvo XC40. My six foot two inch frame slid back there without a struggle. The rear seatback is split 60/40 for cargo flexibility. The seatback has a pass-through for longer cargo items such as skis. Amenities include a fold-down center armrest with built-in cup holders and a small storage cubby. At the rear of the front console are a pair of USB charge ports and a climate-control vent.

Under the Hatch

One of the reasons people buy SUVs and crossovers is for generous cargo space that handles everything from big box store runs to sports equipment storage. With 27 cubic feet of it available aft of the rear seat, the Tonale has plenty of it – 10 cubic feet more than in small crossover SUV competitors such as the Lexus UX, Mercedes-Benz GLA, and Volvo XC40. Fold the rear seat down and that number increases to 54.7 cubic feet, besting the space available in the Audi Q3, BMW X2, and Mercedes-Benz GLA. There is no spare tire under the cargo floor (just a tire inflator kit), which frees up space to stash valuables such as a laptop, purse, or tablet. Access to the Tonale’s cargo hold is via a hands-free power-operated liftgate, standard in all but the base Tonale Sprint.

Safety and Driving Assistance

Neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has rated the Alfa Romeo Tonale for crash test performance. Not that the Tonale is a laggard in this area.

To the contrary, Alfa Romeo equips each Tonale with a broad range of safety and advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS) as standard equipment unlike several of its European brand competitors that make many of these features cost extra. These include eight airbags, a backup camera with active gridlines, full-speed adaptive cruise control with traffic-sign recognition, full-speed forward collision warning with auto emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance, active blind-spot assistance, rear cross-traffic detection, inattentive driver detection, front and rear parking sensors, and automatic high beams.

A few other ADAS systems are available in an optional Active Assist package. For the 360-degree camera that gives an overhead view of the Tonale and its immediate surrounds, this optional package is worth the extra cost. Other elements of the package add lane-centering, stop-and-go functionality, and low-speed traffic jam assist to the cruise control system, as well as semi-autonomous parallel and perpendicular park control with steering assistance.

Driving Engagement

Alfa Romeos have always been fun to drive, and the 2026 Tonale delivers all that and more in a versatile and practical small crossover SUV package. Shod with 235/45R19 all-season tires, the Tonale Sprint test vehicle delivered a sporty ride that balances grip and ride quality. Whereas the base Tonale Sprint uses conventional frequency-sensing shock absorbers, the Tonale Veloce and Tonale Sport Speciale are available with adaptive dual-stage dampers that can adjust the firmness in real time to take the edge off big bumps and ruts while maintaining control on flat stretches. The chassis feels tight with excellent directional stability and little or no body lean in corners. The quick-ratio electric rack-and-pinion steering offers precise responses to driver inputs and is one of the best in the small crossover segment. Braking is another Tonale strong point, with crisp top-of-pedal response and fade-free deceleration from speed, especially on Veloce and Sport Speciale models with Brembo calipers.

On the center console is a silver dollar-sized DNA rotary knob that allows the operator to select from three driving modes: Dynamic (sport), Natural (touring), and Always Engine On. The latter setting on the DNA button was previously dubbed Advanced Efficiency (Eco) but has now been repurposed to allow drivers to bypass the stop/start feature that turns off the engine at stoplights to save gas. Switching to this DNA mode avoids the annoying and uncomfortable situation of switching off the engine (and air conditioning compressor) when driving the Tonale in stop-and-go traffic in hot weather. On the other hand, in temperate weather and light traffic, performance enthusiasts will enjoy the Dynamic mode which optimizes acceleration and quickens shifts while also giving Tonale Veloce and Sport Speciale drivers the option of adjusting the adaptive shocks.

Is the Tonale a Good Vehicle?

With plenty of cabin and cargo space, the 2026 Alfa Romeo Tonale adds sporty flair, luxurious interior appointments, and user-friendly infotainment tech in a compact, easy-to-park package. Although the Tonale’s somewhat peaky turbo engine is both a strongpoint and something the driver needs to adapt to, its superpowers are its engaging, fun-to-drive chassis and classic design details.
