It’s always felt like Subaru and gas mileage are a natural pairing. Its cars are reasonably sized and popular with environmentally conscious customers. And yet, Subaru has spent a dozen years failing to get anyone to buy a gas-electric hybrid version of its hot-selling Crosstrek. 

The first 2014 Crosstrek Hybrid had an obvious flaw: mediocre gas mileage. In EPA testing, it got just 30 mpg – a mere 2 mpg improvement from the gas model, paired with a $3,000 upcharge. Subaru dropped it from the lineup after three years. 

The second Crosstrek Hybrid came out in 2019. It was more economical, but with a twist: You needed to plug it in for maximum efficiency. It could go up to 17 miles on an electric charge at speeds below 65 mph, then get 35 mpg. That’s not bad for folks with a short, low-speed commute and a place to charge at home. But the price premium rose to $8,000. This time, it lasted four model years. 

Is the third time a charm? The all-new 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid is a conventional hybrid like the first generation, not a plug-in. But it gets better gas mileage than the first generation: an EPA-estimated 36 mpg. And at $33,995, it once again costs roughly $3,000 more than a comparable gas-only model. For this review, we just spent a week testing the third-generation Crosstrek Hybrid. Keep reading as we discuss what we loved about this fuel-sipping subcompact crossover SUV – and one main drawback.  

How It Works

The 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid pairs the gas Crosstrek’s 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with two electric motors. These motors shoulder some of the load from the gas engine, meaning that it doesn’t have to work as hard – needing less gas. The gas engine can even switch off entirely when you’re cruising at a steady speed or accelerating slowly. (You can also press a button to select “EV mode,” which is supposed to lock in gas-free driving. However, it typically canceled itself the instant we lifted a foot off the brake pedal.)

A small battery powers the electric motors. It recharges when the gas engine is running, and it also captures energy from the Crosstrek Hybrid’s regenerative braking system. The gauge cluster can display a small rendering of the hybrid system in action and how much charge is in the system’s battery. But if you select this view, you can’t see what gas mileage you’re getting. Subaru makes you choose.

Hybrid Fuel Savings

As we mentioned, the 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid gets 36 mpg in EPA testing. That compares with just 29 mpg for the gas-only Crosstrek. The bulk of the difference comes at lower speeds and stop-and-go traffic, where the hybrid’s small electric motors can have the biggest effect. The gas Crosstrek gets an estimated 26 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. The Crosstrek Hybrid gets 36 mpg in both city and highway driving. 

We beat the EPA estimate to average an excellent 40 mpg during our weeklong test. That compares with just 28 mpg in the last gas-only Crosstrek we tested. These tests aren’t scientifically exact, and we’ll note that hybrids often lose more efficiency than gas cars in cold weather (we tested the Crosstrek Hybrid in June). But we were impressed nonetheless.

Drives Better, Too

The Crosstrek Hybrid’s fuel savings come with another perk: It drives better than the gas model, too. Adding the electric motors boosts the Crosstrek’s output from 180 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque to 194 hp and 199 lb-ft in the hybrid. That gives the hybrid extra juice right off the line, making it feel noticeably peppier than the gas-only model – if not quite a speed demon. Expect to hit 60 mph in about 8 seconds, versus about 8.5 seconds for the gas Crosstrek. But the biggest difference is at lower speeds, where the electric motors help get the Crosstrek Hybrid moving faster. 

Otherwise, both Crosstrek variants drive similarly. That means you can expect a cushy, compliant ride that’s well-suited for either urban potholes or bumpy off-road conditions. You also get an elevated 8.7-inch ground clearance and Subaru’s symmetrical all-wheel drive with X-Mode settings for snow/dirt or deep snow/mud. Also, unlike many AWD hybrids, the Crosstrek Hybrid’s gas engine is connected to the rear wheels. This makes it less economical than hybrids that use a second electric motor to power the rear wheels, but it means the Subaru can send more power to the rear wheels if needed. 

Don’t expect sporty on-road handling, though. The Crosstrek's steering is light and not super responsive, and the suspension is more focused on compliant comfort than poise and control. Also, you can’t get a hybrid version of the gas Crosstrek’s extra-capable Wilderness version.

Rugged Design

While you can’t get a Crosstrek Wilderness Hybrid, every 2026 Subaru Crosstrek is a spunky and rugged-looking subcompact crossover. Subaru created it by taking the body of the sporty-looking Impreza hatchback, then raising it higher off the ground and adding some cladding, sturdy roof racks, and other details. The result is that the Crosstrek is less boxy than a Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid and tougher-looking than a Kia Niro – these being the other two subcompact crossover hybrids on the market. 

The Crosstrek Hybrid shares its body unchanged with non-hybrid Crosstreks (again, except for the souped-up Wilderness). Though the hybrid is new this year, the current Crosstrek generation hit the market as a 2024 model. A small “hybrid” badge on the liftgate announces that it’s the fuel-sipping version. The hybrid also has exclusive wheels and color options, including our test car’s Sand Dune Pearl.

Sturdy Interior With Two Big Screens

Some entry-level crossovers try to make their interiors flashy – with modern, high-tech looks; dressy luxury finishes; or some other type of attention-grabbing style. The Crosstrek’s dashboard is simple and sturdy, and we think many owners will appreciate that vibe. 

Departing from that simplicity is a big 11.6-inch touchscreen, which is included on all Crosstrek Hybrids (and most gas-only Crosstreks). It’s not ultra-modern, but nor is it ultra-simple – Subaru crowded the climate controls into the screen, and some of them require multiple taps to access. At least the Crosstrek has easy knobs for radio volume and tuning, plus hardy switches for the seat heaters. And the Crosstrek’s screen supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. 

A 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster is exclusive to the Crosstrek Hybrid, as the gas model has analog gauges with a small configurable display between them. The hybrid can still present digital representations of conventional round dials, but you can also customize the cluster with other views – including a GPS map.

Roomy and Comfortable for Its Size

Though it’s a subcompact crossover, the Crosstrek has plenty of space for four adults (or five in a pinch). We also found the seats to be well-shaped and thickly cushioned, unlike some affordable cars with flatter, harder chairs.

Cargo space is less generous: 18.6 cubic feet behind the rear seat and 50.6 cubic feet with the rear seat folded down. The hybrid’s batteries live under the cargo floor, but unlike most modern hybrids, they don’t quite fit; Subaru had to raise the floor, cutting into luggage space. The batteries also displace the gas-only Crosstrek’s spare tire; the Crosstrek Hybrid has only a tire-repair kit. You can carry additional stuff on the roof using the standard roof rack or by towing a small 1,500-pound trailer.

Two Well-Equipped Trim Levels

As we mentioned, the 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid starts at $33,995. That’s before a mandatory $1,420 destination charge. The base Crosstrek Hybrid is the Sport model, which sits at the middle of the gas Crosstrek lineup. The Crosstrek Hybrid Sport's standard features include all-wheel drive, a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, a power moonroof, GPS navigation, push-button starting, a wireless smartphone charger, and driver-assistance features such as blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, forward automatic emergency braking, and lane-keeping steering assistance. 

The other available Crosstrek Hybrid model is the Limited, which costs $1,000 more with leatherette upholstery instead of cloth, a heated steering wheel, reverse automatic braking, a driver-attention monitor, and a 10-speaker Harman Kardon stereo instead of the base six-speaker audio system, but no moonroof. Adding back the Sport’s moonroof requires a $1,600 package that also includes a surround-view parking camera. 

The Crosstrek Hybrid Sport, like our test vehicle, is equipped equivalently to the gas Crosstrek Premium with optional add-ons. It costs $30,240 plus destination, undercutting the Crosstrek Hybrid by more than $3,000. And the gas Crosstrek lets you save thousands more by giving up amenities such as the moonroof, the big touchscreen, bigger wheels, and the power driver’s seat.

Crosstrek Hybrid vs. the Competition

As we mentioned, the 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid is just one of three gas-electric subcompact crossovers sold in the U.S.: the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid and the Kia Niro Hybrid.

The Corolla Cross Hybrid has a starting price that’s $4,500 less than the Crosstrek Hybrid. That’s largely due to fewer standard features, but many folks will be happy to pocket the savings from skipping a moonroof, power driver’s seat, bigger touchscreen, blind-spot monitoring, and heated front seats (all of which are available as options on the Toyota). The Corolla Cross Hybrid also gets 42 mpg to the Crosstrek Hybrid’s 36 mpg in EPA testing, and it has a lot more cargo space, sharper on-road handling, and easier-to-use climate controls – physical buttons rather than touchscreen menus. The Subaru counters with superior AWD traction (thanks to that mechanical connection between the engine and rear wheels), slightly better crash-test scores, and a cushier ride. 

The Niro is an affordable, super-economical hybrid for someone who values a crossover’s cargo space and slightly elevated seating position – but doesn’t need AWD. Every Niro is front-wheel drive. But it gets up to 53 mpg in EPA testing while starting at just $27,390, and it’s pleasant to drive, too.

But once you’re looking at the Crosstrek Hybrid’s $33,995 starting price, you can also shop a host of compact crossovers – one size up from the Crosstrek. During the same week we tested this Subaru, we were testing a 2026 Mazda CX-50 Hybrid that starts at just a few hundred dollars more while bringing a luxury-grade interior, crisp handling moves, and a lot more cargo space (and a spare tire), while getting 38 mpg to the Subaru’s 36 mpg. Other nice hybrid compact crossovers in the low $30,000s include the Toyota RAV4, Hyundai Tucson, and Kia Sportage. 

You could also shop the Crosstrek Hybrid against the Subaru Forester Hybrid. The two share most of the same pros and cons, except that the Forester has more room and is easier to see out of – all for just $750 more than a similarly equipped Crosstrek Hybrid Sport. Once you start adding upgrades like leatherette upholstery and a premium stereo, the Forester Hybrid’s prices do rise faster than the Crosstrek Hybrid's. 

Finally, if you drive mostly on the highway, think hard on whether the hybrid’s price premium is worth it. The Crosstrek Hybrid does great in lower-speed, stop-and-go conditions where gas-only cars are the least economical. But cruising on the open highway, many small crossovers get more than 30 mpg – including the non-hybrid Crosstrek.

Few Faults, but One Big One

We enjoyed our time in the 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid. It’s comfortable, capable, easy to drive, functional, and quite economical. If you’re looking for a well-rounded small crossover and you’re not attached to a high-tech experience or sports-car handling, the Crosstrek Hybrid has just one big fault: the price tag. 

Some people will prefer a smaller car, and the Crosstrek Hybrid is a great option for them. But when a bigger one is the same price and gets even better gas mileage, we expect most folks will make that choice. So unless you know you want an economical Crosstrek-sized crossover, give a careful look to other hybrid SUVs.
