Car lovers are getting squeezed out. And by “car,” we mean the traditional definition of a four-wheeled motor vehicle that’s not an SUV or pickup truck. The market has fallen hard for high seating positions and extra cargo space.

But for this review, we tested two honest-to-goodness sports sedans – the premium performance versions of the Mazda3 and Volkswagen Jetta compact economy cars. These cars haven’t changed much in years, but for traditionalists, that’s the perfect antidote to modern cars that focus on functionality and technology over driving pleasure. Both the Mazda3 Turbo and the Jetta GLI have powerful turbocharged engines, lively handling, and lots of luxury features for less than $40,000. Consider them mainstream-brand alternatives to a $50,000 luxury-badged sedan, or the most upscale economy cars you’ll find.

Still, as we found, the 2026 Mazda3 Turbo and the 2026 Volkswagen Jetta GLI go about their mission differently. Keep reading as we compare these two fun four-doors to see how they compare in each of eight categories, then name our overall winner. There’s a good chance you won’t agree – but by the end of this review, you’ll likely know which formula will tempt you into one of these surviving affordable sports sedans.

Pricing and Features

This year, Mazda discontinued the Mazda3 Turbo Carbon Edition, leaving the more expensive Premium Plus as the only trim level of the 2026 Mazda3 Turbo. Similarly, a few years ago, the Jetta GLI dropped its base models and left only the top Autobahn model. So if you want a Mazda3 or Jetta with all the “go fast” bits, you’re also paying up for all the luxury kit. The result is that the 2026 Volkswagen Jetta GLI costs $33,745, and the 2026 Mazda3 Turbo rings in at $36,740. Then add about $1,200 for each car’s mandatory destination charge.

Both these cars come with goodies that include genuine leather upholstery, heating for the front seats and steering wheel, premium sound systems, adaptive cruise control, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. Only the GLI has ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof instead of the Mazda’s smaller opening, or an adaptive suspension system. And the Mazda3 has an exclusive surround-view parking camera.

We’ll discuss two other differences more later on: the Mazda3 has all-wheel drive instead of the GLI’s front-wheel drive, but only the VW lets you choose a manual transmission as well as an automatic. For this category, the Jetta GLI costs several thousand dollars less than the Mazda3 while matching or beating its amenities.

Exterior Design

The Mazda3 and Jetta haven’t changed much in years. Their current generations both came out back in 2019, though the VW’s front and rear ends got dressed up with lightbars and reshaped fascias for the 2025 model year.

The Jetta is a conservatively shaped sedan that stretches a solid-looking 187 inches long – longer than a 2005 VW Passat mid-size sedan. The GLI has sportier details like dual exhaust tips, a blacked-out section of rear bumper, and a red strip that wraps around the front bumper. More than the Mazda3, it announces: “You’re looking at the performance model.”

The Mazda3 Turbo looks more similar to lesser Mazda3 trim levels. And yet, to our eyes, it looks more like a sports sedan. It has a low, aggressive front end with a long hood and slit-like headlights astride a big grille. Around the back, the Mazda3 sedan has crisp taillights and an upright, crisply tailored trunk.

We’ll leave the aesthetic winner to individual tastes, though, between the racier Jetta GLI and the elegantly confident Mazda3 Turbo.

Interior Design

Inside, the Mazda3 and Jetta GLI once again have very different design aesthetics. In this case, though, we have no trouble choosing a winner – the elegantly styled and beautifully finished Mazda. Touch points and moving parts feel more expensive than some luxury-branded cars.

Mazda keeps the dashboard slim. A low, wide 10.3-inch infotainment screen is exclusive to the Mazda3’s Turbo model, and it nestles into the top of the dash. Physical infotainment controls live on the center console between the front seats; easy-to-use climate controls are the only buttons and knobs on the dash itself. Mazda’s infotainment controls have more of a learning curve, especially since the infotainment screen isn’t a touchscreen in most cases; you rotate a knob to navigate different menus. But because of the physical buttons, the screen isn’t needed for as many functions as most modern cars. Plus, the system does work as a touchscreen when you’ve connected your phone apps via wireless Apple CarPlay or Android Auto – which we’d recommend over the built-in system anyway.

The Jetta GLI is the winner if you like a more traditional tech experience. Its digital gauge cluster is heavily customizable, and while its 8-inch touchscreen is technically smaller than the Mazda’s, its boxier shape is more prominent and convenient. But the Jetta’s touch-sensitive climate controls are fussy to use, and its interior looks and feels cheaper than the Mazda’s – with shiny plastic where the Mazda3 has soft padding. Subjectively, we also found the Jetta’s blocky dashboard less attractive than the sleeker Mazda’s. But objectively, the Mazda3’s higher-end feel and simpler climate controls carry this category.

Interior Space and Comfort

The Mazda3 has a beautiful interior, and we found its front seats comfortable and snugly supportive without being confining. But if you’re ever carrying someone in the back, the Jetta is a big winner – literally.

The Mazda3 is nearly as long as the Jetta and has an even longer wheelbase, but less of that space turns up for the rear seat or trunk. Rear passengers will have their knees jammed into the front seatbacks unless they’re moved well forward, and the sedan’s trunk measures a modest 13.2 cubic feet. (A five-door hatchback is also available with more cargo flexibility.)

By contrast, adults can stretch out in the back of the Jetta, and the boxy trunk is more useful than even its generous 14.1 cubic feet would suggest. We preferred the shape of the Mazda3’s front seats, but the Jetta GLI offsets that with exclusive seat ventilation – a boon for hot days. Combined with the Volkswagen’s extra space, the Jetta GLI wins this category.

Ride and Handling

The Mazda3 delivers rock-solid driving dynamics. It’s a solid-feeling stoic, with its steering, ride, and handling feeling supremely natural and controlled. This is a great mini luxury car – smooth, quiet, and agile – and it’s just the driving experience that many buyers will want. And the Mazda3 Turbo comes with all-wheel drive, which helps it confidently put power to the road and handle slippery conditions.

Still, we found the Jetta GLI a bit more fun to drive. Its steering is sharper, and its more sophisticated independent rear suspension and adjustable dampers give it higher handling limits. It’s a little louder than the Mazda3, but it still rides smoothly and comfortably for such a sporty sedan. The GLI still isn’t the most dialed-in small sporty car you can buy, but it’s more fun-focused than the Mazda3 without becoming too uncomfortable or unrefined. Your tastes may differ, but we’ll give the Volkswagen a narrow win in this category.

Acceleration

The 2026 Volkswagen Jetta GLI has a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine making 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. That’s a healthy output for a small car – a 70-hp upgrade over the base Jetta’s 1.5-liter engine. Expect it to hit 60 mph in about 6 seconds with its automatic transmission.

But the 2026 Mazda3 Turbo has even more power – 250 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque from a big 2.5-liter four. And while it's not any quicker than the VW, it delivers that power with less fuss. Its conventional six-speed automatic transmission is a relic, but it shifts more smoothly than the VW’s advanced seven-speed dual-clutch automatic (“DSG” in Volkswagen-speak). And since it has AWD, you can floor the Mazda’s accelerator without worrying about spinning the wheels.

The Jetta GLI’s engine sounds a little better to us. But we’ll give Mazda the edge for its effortlessly smooth acceleration – with one caveat that we’ll come to in a moment.

Transmission Choices

If you love the driver engagement of a manual transmission, the Jetta GLI has a big advantage over the Mazda3 Turbo – a row-your-own six-speed. It’s not as beautifully precise as the shifter in an Acura Integra A-Spec, but the Volkswagen’s manual holds its own. And in this comparison, Mazda doesn’t put up any competition.

You can get a Mazda3 with a manual transmission, but only one trim level of the front-wheel-drive hatchback with its base 186-hp engine. Every Mazda3 Turbo has a six-speed automatic.

Fuel Economy

We mentioned that the Mazda3 Turbo has more power and a less sophisticated transmission than the Jetta GLI’s DSG automatic, and that the Mazda has AWD instead of the VW’s front-wheel drive. These factors helped the Mazda’s smooth power delivery. But they cost it at the gas pump.

The 2026 Mazda3 Turbo sedan gets an EPA-estimated 23 mpg in the city, 32 mpg on the highway, and 27 mpg combined. That’s not bad for an AWD car with 250 horsepower, but it’s not exactly thrifty. We did edge out that estimate to average 28 mpg in a weeklong test.

The 2026 Volkswagen Jetta GLI is a little more economical. It gets 26 mpg in the city, 36 mpg on the highway (or 35 mpg with the DSG automatic), and 29 mpg combined. Our manual test vehicle blew past those EPA figures to average 32 mpg during a week of mixed driving. Both sedans can run on 87-octane regular fuel but make maximum power on premium.

Final Thoughts

If you consider these two sedans by the sum of their parts, the 2026 Volkswagen Jetta GLI is the winner. It’s roomier, it’s more fun, it costs less, and it uses less fuel. Whether you’re looking at practicality or grins, it makes the most sense. Right?

Instead, our pick is the 2026 Mazda3 Turbo.

Both these sedans set out to be upscale yet relatively affordable sports sedans. And it’s the Mazda that puts the most important pieces together seamlessly. Yes, we might wish for more rear legroom, livelier steering, better gas mileage, spiffier infotainment, or a manual transmission. But we get the impression the Mazda3 is exactly the car Mazda set out to build: a perfectly executed sports sedan that intentionally feels solid and confident more than eager and playful.

To us, the Jetta GLI’s glossily low-rent cabin, loud ride, clunkier automatic transmission, and front-wheel drive detract more from an overall appealing package. Even if you like the VW more overall – and plenty of driving enthusiasts will – you’re unlikely to count these points as advantages.
